Plan Your Life First. Then Plan Your Money.

We all find ourselves juggling multiple responsibilities and priorities. From work to family to personal goals, it can be overwhelming to keep everything in balance. And when it comes to our finances, it is tempting to jump into budgeting and saving without taking the time to consider broader life goals and the stage of life we are in.

The truth is, taking a moment to plan your life goals and knowing the life stages before getting stuck into money matters is essential to achieving financial freedom.

Start with Your Life Goals

Before you can effectively manage your finances, you need to have an understanding of what you want your life to look like. This means taking the time to reflect on your values, passions, and long-term aspirations. Do you want to travel the world? Start your own business? Buy a home? Retire early? Whatever your goals may be, they should be the driving force behind your financial decisions.

Then Align Your Goals the Life Stages

Once you know your life goals, anchor them in your current life stage, keeping an eye on the future.

1. First Real Job

Starting your career is an exciting time, but it can be intense. It’s the time to set your foundation both in life and in money. This is when you become truly independent, managing your life and your money on your terms.

2. Partnership or Marriage

If you're in a committed relationship, it's important to have open and honest conversations about your finances. Discuss, plan, and align your individual and joint life and financial goals.

3. Having Kids

Starting a family is a huge milestone, and it comes with added (financial) responsibilities. Next to the sleepless nights, and the crazy childcare costs, there are many money decisions you’ll need to think through.

4. Your Career

As your career accelerates, your life and financial goals will likely change. You might want a career break, or to double-down on the big job. Whatever you choose, few careers are linear, so it’s always good to have considered the life and money eventualities that might arise.

5. Progression

Many of life’s big milestones have been achieved and you’re likely entering a calmer, more stable space. Those larger life goals and lifestyle aspirations may grow in importance; buying a home, or a holiday home, going on lavish holidays or getting to grips with the future.

6. The Divorce or Breakup

No one plans for a divorce. But relationships can end unexpectedly, and it's important to have a plan in place as your emotional and financial situation will be impacted. That being said, new relationships also represent new opportunities.

7. Retirement

What has always seemed so far away is now right here on your doorstop. Key is to think through the big questions around when you want to retire, and where and what kind of life you envisage.

8. Passing on wealth

You may choose to leave decisions of how your money is passed to your family and friends to fate; but that rarely achieves what you had hoped. Again, knowing what you want and actioning it early is key to giving you financial peace of mind.

Some final thoughts...

Of course, no life is linear, and no one can predict all eventualities. It might seem overwhelming when you start, but taking a moment to step back and anchor your money plans in life goals and life stages is essential to achieving financial success, security, and happiness.

It’s never too late to start.
