The lowest level in ~2 years. What it means for mortgages, savings and investing, plus a 10-minute action you can finish today!

The Bank of England has cut the Bank Rate to 4.0% (from 4.25%) a narrow decision that puts rates at their lowest in around two years.

Difficult decision as they try to balance Inflation which is higher than expected (4%) vs low GDP growth.

The committee have suggested to expect a gradual reduction going forward. With it being unlikely that they will reduce rates in September. Next likely cut: Nov/Dec.

What does that mean for your day-to-day money? Let’s break it down....

Mortgages 🏠

  • Tracker/variable: expect repayments to fall broadly in line with the cut once lenders update their rates.
  • Fixed: pricing may drift lower, but it won’t be dramatic overnight. If your fix ends within 6–9 months, start comparing now but remember if rates do reduce again you can ask for a refreshed rate which maybe lower!

Credit & loans 💳

  • Rates will come down, but lenders don’t always pass cuts on quickly. Use this as a prompt to tidy expensive debt.

Savings 💰

  • Rate cuts usually happen quickly for savings. Don’t let cash sit at 0.1–3% ... better options do exist!
  • Impact of leaving it? With inflation at 4% if you are earning anything less than this on your savings you are loosing money!

Investing 💹

  • Investing helps you beat inflation long term! Is now the right time to start getting confident with investing? (the answer is always yes!)

The 10-minute “Savings Rate Refresh”

  1. Audit every cash pot (main bank + savings apps). Note the rate, access rules, and any bonus expiry dates.
  2. Compare against current best buys for: easy access, fixed periods, and Cash ISAs...current rates ->
  3. Be mindful of: Bonus rates, deposit limits, withdrawal limits, types of accounts (ISA vs normal saving).
  4. Switch under-performing pots; consider spreading across two accounts (one easy-access for your emergency fund, one fixed for longer term savings).
